‘They are distant creatures. Primitive and peculiar, they are things unlike any animal or plant we’ve grown to know. In time and with fear, man has come to call them “Mushi…”’
‘Mushi’ is the name given to creatures that represent the primeval body of life that surrounds us, that so few of us are aware of and that hold such great influence over our daily lives. These phenomena are documented in the manga series ‘Mushishi’, written and illustrated by Yuki Urushibara, which is the main influence for both the tape and shirt. The presiding feeling is one of calm, quiet reflection. It draws the viewer in to it’s incredibly beautiful watercolour landscapes and inspires the same kind of thought-provoking response as we’re looking to bring to people in our project.
The “Meeting Mushi” tape aims to draw together elements of organic and electronic sound, taking field-recordings and natural, everyday sounds and blending them with more modern Rhodes and synthesised flavours. It takes from 21st century dance music and aligns it with jazz influenced harmony, designed to be listened to either through club sound systems or home stereos. Inspired by the minimalistic soundtrack that accompanies the television series, the pieces are incredibly sparse, stripped back to the core in order to expose the intricacies of each part. From the crisp, trap stylings of “PowerCut…” through to the more lo-fi and atmospheric “DragonFly” and “Frost”, above all this music is here to be danced to.
Cold Heart Collective
Founded in 2011 by fashion designer and cousin of Claremont, ‘Escha’s’ Cold Heart Collective is a collaborative label that aims to create hand worked, one-off products and is responsible for the release’s artwork and its accompanying garment. All the shirts were hand printed in house by Cold, making each piece unique and reinforcing the independently creative aspect that this project in part represents.
The designs are made to incorporate the graphic collage heavy aesthetic of the Collective with a lighter colour palette and oriental influences that parallel the music. Re-worked stills from the anime were used as the graphic basis: The cherry blossom branch and needle sleeve patterns being a representation of temporary beauty that can’t be recreated, mimicking the production process of the shirt and also the live field recorded aspect of the tape. Also, the inner label contains a printed URL link to a file of bonus musical content, adding something exclusive to the wearer.
